Happy 28th Birthday, Kate!

Richard Palmer of the Daily Express writes this weekend that Kate is spending part of her birthday weekend with Prince William at Sandringham.  He suggests that she may be having tea with The Queen on her big day.

Palmer explains, “The couple, who have been dating on and off for seven years, are due to spend part of the weekend at the Royal Family’s Norfolk estate amid mounting speculation that they will soon announce their engagement.”

Last year, Prince William’s car was pictured outside of Kate’s parents’ Berkshire home on her birthday, suggesting that Kate had enjoyed a quiet birthday celebration at home with her family and her beau.  This year it sounds as if at least part of the day may be spent with William’s family as well.

Kate has been photographed at Sandringham before, notably last December out shooting with William and Prince Harry on the grounds of the estate.  Such photographs have not been released this year — probably because of The Queen’s crack-down on paparazzi lenses on the family’s private property.

Hope the birthday weekend is great!

The always unintentionally-humorous Katie Nicholl wrote in this week’s Mail on Sunday that Kate Middleton can be sure that her royal beau, Prince William, will be around to help celebrate her 28th birthday in January.

Nicholl writes, “Prince William has made sure his first official overseas visit is carefully scheduled so he doesn’t miss girlfriend Kate Middleton’s birthday.  He has put his foot down over the January tour of New Zealand after missing her last two birthdays.  The Prince has insisted he will not set off until after Kate’s big day on January 9, when she turns 28.”

Only a couple of problems there, really.  One is that the logistics of major royal events don’t tend to be planned around the birthday of a girlfriend.  The other one is that William didn’t miss Kate’s last birthday — in fact, it was Katie Nicholl herself who reported that William spent Kate’s birthday at the Middleton family home in Berkshire last year!  (You can read my blog on the story from last January here.)  Sounds like someone needs to consult with her own archives more often!

Photo Credit: dailymail.co.ukMembers of the royal family, including Prince William, have drawn criticism in Britain for their failure to appear at the celebrations to mark the first Armed Forces Day.  The Queen and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were the only senior royals to have attended.

Tabloids claim that Harry was out partying on the day, but they have been unable to locate William’s weekend activities except to say that he had a “private weekend.”  News of the World columnist Robert Jobson wrote this weekend, “William was missing too – but at least he had the good sense not to go out on the lash the night before,” but Jobson could not report on William’s particular whereabouts.  (One source, InStyle UK, claims William hit up the Glastonbury music festival, but no photos of him at the event have surfaced, and the article calls him “Prince Williams.”)

But earlier this year Katie Nicholl (a hit-and-miss royal writer for the Mail on Sunday) wrote that William was attempting to get time off to attend the 60th birthday party for Kate’s father, Michael Middleton: “William turns 27 on June 21, two days before Kate’s father Michael’s birthday. Mr Middleton’s do is planned for a Saturday at the family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, and William is lobbying RAF top brass for the following Monday off so he can enjoy a few tipples.”

No reports have yet come out of Bucklebury.  Mr. Middleton’s birthday was on June 23, and the party could not have been the preceeding weekend, as Kate and William were celebrating William’s 27th birthday in Cornwall.  This past weekend seems a likely date for a party to have taken place.

William and Mr. Middleton share a common interest in flight, as Mr. Middleton was a commercial pilot in the early years of his marriage, and William is training to become a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot with the Royal Air Force.  Mr. and Mrs. Middleton attended William’s passing out from Sandhurst with Kate in 2006 (pictured above).  Perhaps William’s closeness to his girlfriend’s family led him to choose to celebrate a birthday with them rather than attend the nation’s Armed Forces celebrations?

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been known to slip away for secret holidays using false names, including a famous post-breakup visit to the Seychelles in 2007 under the names “Martin and Rosemary Middleton.” Now The Sun reports that the two have done it again, choosing the names “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” to book accomodations in Cornwall, where they spent William’s 27th birthday with friends.

Duncan Larcombe’s source explains, “They have been staying at private house under the assumed name Mr and Mrs Smith. It is quite funny really that they feel they need to go to such great lengths to keep their visit a secret – but I suppose it adds to the romance.”

William’s brother Harry was reportedly along with the group to celebrate his brother’s birthday. While in Cornwall, the couple and friends reportedly shared a picnic, watched a televised rugby match, and played tennis.
